PHYSICAL EDUCATION
2010/11
Welcome to the new school
year. Here are a few tips and pieces of information to help
keep you informed about what goes on in the gym.
First of all the physical education teaching duties are
shared this year. Mrs. Unrau will be teaching in the gym
for the first half of the day until lunch. Mr. Dugas will
be teaching in the gym after lunch till the end of the day.
Your child should have the same teacher for gym all the
time but there may be the odd exception.
Each student in grades 3-5 will need to have gym strip here
at school on their gym days. Gym strip consists of shorts
or athletic pants, a shirt and shoes. The clothes should be
different than what they wore to school that day and the
shoes should be non-marking (see if they mark, some shoes
are advertised as non-marking but make plenty of marks).
The shoes should also be athletic shoes that do up tight.
Shoes that don‰??t do up tight are dangerous and will be
considered as not having gym strip that day (NO FLIP FLOPS,
CROCS, ETC). All grades K-5 should have some good running
shoes and only grade 3-5 need gym strip. When the weather
is nice students have a tendency to wear sandals or flip
flops. Please note what days your child has gym, so that
you can make sure they have running shoes on those days.
They cannot participate in bare feet or socks for safety
reasons. Each student should have a bag to put their gym
strip in, please no plastic grocery bags as they fall
apart.
A good idea would be for your child to take their strip
home on Friday for washing and bring it back on Monday. If
your child forgets his/her gym strip they will receive one
warning per term. If they forget a second time, they will
write a letter home to you, that you need to sign and
return the next day. If they do not bring back the note
signed, they will sit out and re-write the note. We find
this helps to remind the students to bring their strip.
Once they finish the letter they may join in for what‰??s
left of the class. If a student forgets 3 or more times in
a term, they have to write a letter and cannot join in when
they are finished. Arriving prepared is also part of the PE
mark. It falls under rules and routines. After each report
card all students get another free chance.
We also have a 3 strikes policy in the gym. It is as
follows:
strike 1 = a warning
strike 2 = time out on the bench, re-enter the activities
after a break
strike 3 = student is out for the rest of the gym period
and a note goes home
The note must be signed and
brought back the next gym day to be allowed to participate
in gym that day.
This year we will be
particularly strict with change room behaviour. All
students are expected to follow the change room guidelines,
which include no talking in the change room or lineup and
hanging up their gym bags with all their clothes in it on a
hook.
We will discuss this with your child on the first day of
gym and we hope by being clear about the guidelines we will
have one of the best years ever!
